How to Identify Bats
Bats roost in attics, soffits, chimneys, and gaps under roofline flashing, often entering through gaps as small as three-eighths of an inch. A colony is usually noticed through sound in the evening, staining around an entry gap, or droppings (guano) accumulating in the attic or against exterior walls.
Signs You May Have a Problem
- Chittering or scratching sounds in the attic or walls around dusk
- Dark staining or guano accumulation below a roofline gap
- Bats seen exiting the same spot at dusk over several nights
Why It Matters
Bats are protected under Utah wildlife regulations, so removal has to be done through humane exclusion rather than extermination, and the timing has to avoid sealing flightless pups inside during the summer maternity season. Guano buildup can also become a respiratory hazard in attic spaces, which is why permanent sealing after exclusion matters as much as the exclusion itself.
